Winter Skincare
It’s winter, thus my skin is very pale and very dry. Over the years, through trial and error, I’ve learned how to add color and hydrate my skin, especially the skin on my face. While that may seem easy enough, all products are not created equal, and there’s lots of lifestyle things that make a big difference too.
First things first…hot baths and showers, dry saunas, caffeinated beverages, sitting to close to (and for too long at) the fireplace, and cranking the heat in your car - all things I absolutely love - dry out our skin. Hate to be the bearer of bad news but they require caution and moderation. Oh, and don’t make the mistake of scrubbing your face too hard or cleansing it too often. In winter, I find it to be advantageous to allow for your natural oils to regenerate.
And now on to the products:
Sandlewood Serum Supreme: smells nice, feels nice, plumps up my skin, helps it feel nourished. If you are prone to redness, this is great too as it is very calming.
Castor Oil: this is as low cost and basic as it comes. I mix castor oil with a few drops of essential oil (usually rose, myrrh or frankincense). Before I take my dogs out into the winter wind and cold, I slather castor all over my face. It’s deeply hydrating and acts like a mini-barrier, and when I return home, my skin is less traumatized by the elements.
Immortelle Oil (a.k.a., helichrysum oil): you know what its nickname is? Liquid stitches. I love putting a few drops of this anywhere I have irritation, windburn or coldburn. I use it medically on scratches, burns, or rashes too.
Kora Organics Balm Stick: this balm is great for lips, skin and hair. Yes, I rub it into the palm of my hands, rub my hands together, and then run it through the ends of my hair. The Kora one I use might have been discontinued as I couldn’t find a link (sorry!), but find a big chunky balm and carry it with you in winter. Whenever you’re in need of some moisture, on goes the balm.
RMS Bronzer: The RMS brand is one of my favorites as it’s not filled with toxins. This bronzer (in shade “Malibu Muse”) looks sun kissed, very natural looking, not orange.
RMS Lip2Cheek: Two in one! Color is soooo needed right now, and this hue (Illusive) is rich..plus, all you need is a dab on each check and a dab on your bottom lip.
I wake up and moisturize, and before bed I moisturize. Winter is the time for at least a double whammy of hydration.
Topical potions and creams are winter must-haves, but ultimately, healthy skin is an inside job, so keep eating your fruits and veggies. They are juicy. A mango for breakfast? A green juice? Roasted sweet potatoes? Leek soup? 100percent yes. And supplements? Also 100percent yes, but find ones that work for you. I swear by Vimergy Vitamin C and take it all year long.
Hope you find this useful info. Please take what resonates. When summer comes around, I’ll share my summer skincare strategy. It’s completely different, but until then, stay warm, lube up and remember skincare is healthcare.
